CompareClip

Privacy Policy

Overview

CompareClip ("we," "our," or "the extension") is a free Chrome browser extension that helps you compare products across online stores and share the results. This policy explains what data the extension reads, what it sends to our servers, and how we use it. We do not collect personal information and we do not require you to create an account.

Data the extension reads

When you click the CompareClip icon on a product page, the extension reads the following information directly from the page's content (the DOM):

  • Product name
  • Price
  • Product image URL
  • Star rating and review count (if present)
  • Brand name (if present)
  • Page URL

The extension only reads this data when you explicitly click "Add to Comparison." It does not run continuously in the background, does not monitor your browsing history, and does not read any other content from pages you visit.

Data stored locally

Clipped products are stored in chrome.storage.localon your device. This data is never shared with third parties and is only accessible to the CompareClip extension. You can clear it at any time using the "Clear comparison" button in the extension popup.

Data sent to our servers

When you add a product to a comparison, the product data listed above is sent over HTTPS to our API at api.compareclip.com, operated on Cloudflare's infrastructure. This allows us to create a shareable comparison page at compareclip.com/c/[id].

We also log the IP address of the request for rate-limiting purposes (maximum 10 clips per IP per hour). We do not store or log IP addresses beyond this temporary rate-limit counter, which expires after one hour.

Comparison data is stored for 30 days, after which it is automatically deleted. We do not sell, share, or transfer this data to any third party.

What we do not collect

  • Personally identifiable information (name, email, address)
  • Login credentials or account data
  • Browsing history or pages you visit without clicking the extension
  • Cookies or cross-site tracking identifiers
  • Payment information
  • Location data

Browser permissions

The extension requests the following Chrome permissions, each used only for the stated purpose:

  • activeTab / scripting — to read product data from the current tab when you click the icon.
  • storage — to store your clipped products locally between browser sessions.
  • Host permission for product retail sites — to enable content scripts on supported retailer pages so the extension can detect product information.

Third-party services

Comparison pages are hosted on Vercel (compareclip.com) and our API runs on Cloudflare Workers (api.compareclip.com). Both providers have their own privacy policies. We use Claude (Anthropic)solely to categorize the type of product being compared (e.g., "headphones"); no personal data is included in that request.

Limited use disclosure

CompareClip's use of data obtained from Chrome APIs complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use the data only to provide and improve the product comparison feature. We do not use this data for any purpose unrelated to that function.

Children's privacy

CompareClip is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect any information from children.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify users via the Chrome Web Store listing. Your continued use of the extension after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
